Sheep stories
Our hardy Jacob sheep will be grazing out on the Commons throughout the winter months. In the new year sheep will be grazing at Farthing Downs behind small areas of electric fencing. The sheep are a great management tool for following up after scrub clearance work has removed brambles and small scrub re-growth.
Please keep your dog under control in grazing areas
We were very sad to learn of a terrible attack on a flock of Downlands Partnership sheep grazing in Banstead. Three sheep were killed and many more wounded and disfigured. The attack could have been avoided if the owner had sufficient control of their dog. Please take note of grazing posters when entering the Commons and keep dogs on a lead when walking through the grazing areas. Under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953 t he offence of ‘livestock worrying’ is classed not only as the attacking of livestock but also chasing or even not being under suitable control within a field containing livestock. If livestock are pregnant, a chase from a dog can cause that animal to miscarry her lamb or calf, which obviously has devastating effects to flocks and herds.
